It just wasn?t me. I never thought I would have ripped abs. I thought I would never be great, fit and attractive.
Bodybuilding has become almost like a hobby for me. One that has given me great rewards with a body that I am proud of today. I didn?t know everything that I know today about diet and building muscles though. It was learned over a long period of time and during that time I learned what I know from personal experience. I saw what worked and what didn?t. I understand now how my body works and my body shows the results of this knowledge. I wasted a lot of time and I hope that you will take advantage of what I have learned and take the shortcuts that I missed along the way.
Now, you might think that getting a ripped set of abs is all about working out hard all the time but it is not all about pumping iron. Diet plays a big role in building muscle. Perhaps bigger than you might imagine! After all, our muscles are a part of our body and they need the right food and proper rest to grow, like a small child. Your muscles grow when they are fed the proper amounts of fat, carbs and protein. Your muscles need all of these elements if you hope to find success in building bigger, stronger muscles.
If you are a little wide around the middle and you get bummed out because you are alway picked last in gym class then the reason is probably because of your diet. Chances are that you are eating too many carbohydrates. This and this alone is what makes you fat.

Zoo Educators: Saving the Animals, One Person at a Time
Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here!
On our first week of Zoo InternQuest all of us were excited by the unknown. We sat in a secluded area of the Zoo and waited for the Zoo Educator, Kim Carroll. When Ms. Carroll came out to greet us she wasn?t alone. Along with her was Kizzy, a beautiful African grey parrot. She told us a bit of information about Kizzy and how her species is one of the most intelligent birds in the world. Unfortunately, like other parrots, African greys are threatened due to habitat loss and the pet trade.
Before Kizzy came to the Zoo, she was kept as a pet. Birds can be very difficult to take care of. They are very vocal animals because in the wild that is their way of communicating with each other. When they become pets, they don?t lose that communication skill and, in turn, they can be very loud in an enclosed area such as a home. Also, birds can be very messy eaters because they have to crack open seeds in order to eat. This may seem like a hassle for a pet owner but, in the wild, birds do this and help spread seeds that can grow into trees and other plants. Another thing to consider if you or someone you know is thinking about getting a pet bird like Kizzy: a lot of birds can live to be fifty years old or more! So, if you get a bird at the age of ten, it can be your responsibility until you are about sixty years old. That?s a long time and a huge commitment to a pet.
Kizzy is now living at the Zoo and playing an important role as an Animal Ambassador. This means that Zoo Educators like Ms. Carroll take her to schools, hospitals and senior care facilities to educate people about wildlife and conservation. Growing Up Green, for example, is a program for children ages three to seven years old which introduces the concept of recycling. The Zoo leaves children with key messages, including the importance of conservation, awareness of endangered species and how each person can do little things to help save wildlife.
After the private session with the Animal Ambassadors, Ms. Carroll took us on an Inside Look Tour to update us on all the renovations at the San Diego Zoo. This tour is a perfect opportunity for guests to get up-close and personal with some of the animals. It?s also a perfect opportunity for the Zoo to show off its conservation side. For example, on one of the last stops of the tour we came to the Bactrian camel enclosure. Ms. Carroll pointed out how of part the enclosure was made from compressed recycled plastic that had been conformed into wooden-like fencing. Keepers have discovered their own way to walk the talk. When the Bactrian camels? thick winter coat sheds, it?s perfect for bird nesting material as well as enrichment- the smell helps trigger the hunting instincts of big cats. In the Bactrian camel enclosure we met Mongo, a massive male, who was very generous with his saliva while he was eating his celery treat.
We ended our tour at the giraffe enclosure where we got the opportunity to feed Silver, a male giraffe who towered over us with his long legs and neck. Silver?s long blackish-blue tongue wrapped around the acacia leaves and snatched the leaves from our hands. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

While it?s not very romantic to compare getting married to buying a new house, you are smart enough to know that you have to make sure it?s not going to fall apart or cost you more than you planned once you?ve made the commitment. With marriage, when you invest so heavily emotionally, financially, professionally, and socially, any edge you can have beforehand is going to greatly reduce the chances of divorce and disappointment.
I?m not encouraging you to plan for divorce, but I am saying it?s imperative that you plan NOT to be divorced.
Here are some conversations you will want to consider having before saying, ?I do.?
1. Make sure you both know exactly what your financial situation is now and what your prospects are for the future. Make a list of credit cards, loan balances, other debts and monthly bills you currently have and what will continue after the wedding. Share this list with each other, keeping detailed, permanent records of these items so that, in the future, if a dispute arises, you know exactly what your status was at the time you married. Include bank statements, credit card statements, information about life insurance, tax records, and everything that you will need to avoid disagreements in the future.? Generally, in community property states, spouses can be liable for each other?s debts.
2. Do you need a pre-nup?? In the past, requesting your intended to sign a pre-nup was sometimes akin to being received as, ?I don?t trust you.?? A pre-nup may be important in situations where one spouse comes into the marriage with substantially more assets or in second marriage situations.? You can fix what is considered separate property and community and decide in advance on such things as spousal support, taxes,and bills. Today, we know that in many marriages it?s just good business and is to protect both parties in case of divorce or lawsuits.
3? Make a list of all property you own that is not in already in a trust and decide how it?s to be ?distributed? after the wedding.? As unnecessary as you think it might be, discuss what will happen to property that is accumulated in the future. What if one of you inherits a substantial sum of money or property from a parent or family member??? Get it in writing beforehand if you do not want these future assets to become community property in a divorce.
2. Discuss life insurance, health insurance, and other related issues and determine if you are both in agreement as to what should be acceptable when you are a couple and what levels of coverage you both feel would be best for each of you.
3. Discuss your estate plan ? your Will or Trust. Do you have one now? Whether you do or not, discuss with your Personal Family Lawyer ? a will or trust that will go into effect once you have become a married couple.? Married couples have certain tax advantages that can be lost without the proper planning.? These things should not be filed away mentally as something you?ll take care of when you have kids or get close to retirement.? Do it now!
4. Discuss your taxes and how you will handle filing and tax liabilities for the future.
5. Discuss health and medical issues. Determine your current health status and decide for the future what you would want to happen should you become incapacitated ? will you want to remain on life support and receive nutrition and hydration??? Capitol Hill weighs GOP payroll tax gambit (AP)
WASHINGTON ? House lawmakers are returning to Capitol Hill to weigh a proposal by GOP leaders to extend the 2-percentage-point cut in the payroll tax through the end of the year and add the approximately $100 billion cost to the nation's $15 trillion-plus debt instead of scrounging around the budget for ways to pay for it.
In the Democratic-majority Senate, a top leader said the proposal was "a major step forward" even as other Democrats worried it could jeopardize efforts to renew unemployment benefits for millions of the long-term jobless and efforts to forestall a scheduled cut in fees to doctors who treat Medicare patients. Those proposals would remain in the hands of a House-Senate negotiating panel that's looking for spending cuts to defray the deficit impact.
President Barack Obama was scheduled to make a statement on the payroll tax at the White House Tuesday morning, and the idea is sure to be a topic of conversation Tuesday at the weekly closed-door conferences of Senate Democrats and Republicans.
House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., and GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy of California said the House could vote on the payroll tax measure this week but the renewal of jobless benefits and the Medicare "docs' fix" still would have to be paid for with spending cuts elsewhere.
The GOP statement came after intense talks over the weekend failed to produce an agreement. Republicans were pressing for pay cuts for federal workers and requiring them to contribute more to their pensions. They recoiled at a Democratic proposal to raise Transportation Security Administration per-ticket airline security fees.
"Democrats' refusal to agree to any spending cuts in the conference committee has made it necessary for us to prepare this fallback option to protect small business job creators and ensure taxes don't go up on middle-class workers," the GOP leadership statement said.
Without action by Congress by the end of the month, payroll taxes will rise for 160 million Americans. The 2-percentage-point tax cut delivers about $20 a week to a worker making $50,000 a year and a tax cut totaling $2,000 this year for someone making a $100,000 salary.
Democrats were encouraged and said the development could break an impasse over the payroll tax proposal and the other expiring provisions.
"This is a major step forward in these negotiations," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.
"We've been making the point that when (it comes to) tax cuts for folks at the very top, the House Republicans went to great lengths to change their rules to say you don't have to pay for those," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. "And yet they've been saying that when it comes to a short-term, 10-month payroll tax cut for middle-income people, all of a sudden you have to pay for it."
But Democrats warned that decoupling the payroll tax from the larger legislation could jeopardize efforts to renew the jobless benefits and the fix to the Medicare payment formula.
"It's completely irresponsible to leave behind nearly 5 million unemployed Americans whose benefits will expire and 47 million seniors and disabled Americans whose access to health care would be jeopardized," said Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., a member of the 20-lawmaker House-Senate negotiating panel.
"There is no reason all three of these priorities cannot proceed at the same time," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said.
The GOP move reflects a desire by party leaders to avoid a political hit if the payroll tax expires at the end of the month. And it would avoid burdening businesses with uncertainties regarding their payroll systems. On the other hand, jobless benefits lapsed for several weeks in 2010, and delays in adopting the Medicare fix can be dealt with by delaying the processing of Medicare claims.
"It is prudent for our leadership to take whatever action is necessary to ensure American workers are not hit with a tax increase on March 1," said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., the lead GOP negotiator.
The White House did not embrace the House leadership idea.
"We are willing to work with them to offset it in a responsible way," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. "And we expect Congress to get its work done and to extend it ? the payroll tax cut, unemployment insurance and the doc fix." But Carney added, "Let's just see how this process plays out."
The move by the GOP leadership still would leave it to negotiators to come up with $30 billion or $40 billion in deficit savings to extend jobless benefits averaging about $300 a week to people who have been out of work for more than six months. Republicans have pressed to cut the number of weeks from the maximum 99 permitted under current policies and economic conditions down to as few as 59 weeks. They also are pressing to require people receiving unemployment to enroll in GED classes and allow states to condition benefits on the passage of drug tests.

Luxury fashion world tweaking its style for Gen Y (AP)
NEW YORK ? Luxury fashion still caters to movie stars, high-powered businesswomen and ladies who lunch, but designers are starting to show interest in that generation's daughters.
Halfway through New York Fashion Week, familiar runway themes like military tailoring, old-school rock `n' roll, and Hollywood Golden Age glam are showing tweaks designed to appeal to younger eyes: the double-breasted coat in shiny patent leather, tweed suits infused with metallics and leather substituted in silhouettes that used to be silk.
"New customers are getting into luxury fashion in a way they weren't before the recession," said Ed Jay, senior vice president of American Express Business Insights.
Longtime clients who bought full-ticket designer clothes before the economy soured have proven loyal, but they aren't buying as much as they used to, Jay said. But the luxury market is seeing new interest among Gen Y fashionistas, who didn't used to buy much high-end but are now starting to, spurred in part by the ease of online purchases. "Newcomers don't spend as much per ticket, but there are more of them," he said.
The Row, the collection designed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, which previewed Monday, seemed to speak directly to women (especially the younger set) who live the sort of uptown life that requires clothes for special occasions, but who aren't interested in traditional suits or eveningwear. Think cozy chenille jackets or cashmere tops with an underlayer of sheer chiffon, or paired with a full-length skirt.
Ken Downing, fashion director of Neiman Marcus, said that even the fur turning up on a lot of runways could motivate younger shoppers. "We are seeing a lot of mink, a lot of textural mink. You thought of mink before as your grandmother's but this is through a new lens. ... Mink is something a lot of women don't have."
Some of the fur being shown is faux, but whether younger shoppers ? especially given the mainstreaming of veganism and animal rights ? will buy real fur-accented pieces as a new trend remains to be seen.
But Downing said the way fur is being shown now is often as part of a coat, sweater, or skirt, rather than an entire fur coat. Downing said it was a youthful way of wearing it, flattering and interesting. "Fur continues to modernize into a sportswear item," he said.
And while designers hope their new collections will inspire spending by shoppers young and old, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Fashion Week is an increasingly profitable enterprise for the city. At an appearance with Diane von Furstenberg Monday, Bloomberg announced that the twice-yearly shows are expected to generate an economic impact of $865 million for the city in 2012.
The number, calculated by the city's Economic Development Corporation, is up from an estimated $773 million in 2007.
"We are the fashion capital of the world. The buzz it creates helps underscore our city's reputation as a cutting-edge capital of fashion, home to more than double the number of fashion companies in Paris," Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg and von Furstenberg, who is president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, used their appearance at a fashion incubator for fledgling designers to highlight a number of ongoing city efforts to support an industry that employs 5.7 percent of the city's workforce and provides nearly $2 billion in yearly city tax revenue.
Bulk manufacturing has shifted out of the city's garment district to low-cost overseas venues, but Bloomberg said programs do exist to train and support fashion entrepreneurs. "If you're going to make a million white T-shirts, it's hard to see how that is going to stay here," he said. But "when it gets to hands-on customer service, real quality, that's where New York can star, because intellectual capital is our raison d'etre."
And Von Furstenberg said the city's manufacturing industry is not entirely a lost cause. "Some of the manufacturing is actually coming back as the cost of goods over there is getting higher," she said. "I've expanded my sample room here. We are manufacturing here. Things change."
MARC JACOBS
Marc Jacobs, always the showman, turned his New York Fashion Week show into a mystical forest Monday night, presenting his fall collection amid an old-school fairy tale, complete with characters wearing oversized fur hats and embellished big-buckle shoes. There were hints of Victoriana, with bustles tacked on to some of the dresses, and a sequined faux-fur coat that appeared to be covered in snowflakes.
Nearly hidden amid the onstage drama unfolding at the Lexington Avenue Armory were beautiful pieces of outerwear and chic cocktail clothes. The palette had rich tones of purple and bottle green, with a good dose of celebratory silver sparkle. His Shetland wool stoles turned into a trend for fall before the audience walked out the door.
Jacobs is known for incredibly original and dramatic Fashion Week presentations. Actress Rose Byrne ("Bridesmaids") described the show as "a kind of Grimm's fairy tale" and "Tim Burton-y," "unique and beautiful."
DONNA KARAN
Donna Karan's runway show Monday was all woman ? even in tophats and tails. The opening look for her signature label was a gray-and-black pinstripe jacket with a crisp white taffeta bodysuit ? Karan's signature piece ? that was fashioned to look like a button-down shirt.
She also offered long coats with strong shoulders and lapel collars, and a riding jacket paired with pinstripe mohair pants.
Skirts and dresses were mostly long with sharp-cut knife pleats for movement. Tops were mostly slim and tailored with nothing frilly, not even when she added sparkle.
When she got to the finale, however, Karan was fully in touch with her feminine side, sending down a red-hot scarlet-colored, stretch-satin evening gown.
CAROLINA HERRERA
Carolina Herrera's fall collection highlighted what's likely to be a trend for next season: styles that put the focus on a woman's face thanks to high, interesting necklines.
No decollete and not a lot of leg, either. Attention was drawn upward as one model wore a hand-painted organza scarf with her navy wool suit with black grosgrain detail, and another wore a tweed suit with a fox-fur collar. There was a lovely lilac cashmere kaleidoscope-print scarf that complemented a cropped purple-wool jacket and slim silk mikado pant.
Herrera went with a more architectural silhouette than a frilly one, but as a seasoned supplier of chic clothes, she moves easily between the two looks. The finale ballgown in bright pink was worn off the shoulder with a folded fabric bodice. A key daytime outfit ? something her luxury-seeking customers count on her for ? was a navy knit turtleneck with a broadtail-fur (flat lambswool) front and an indigo-colored pencil skirt.
She featured a series of abstract prints on her eveningwear, which made a statement on the catwalk that might be hard to appreciate in tighter quarters. But, alas, the Herrera woman lives in a world of grand entrances. Herrera loyalist Renee Zellweger once again filled her spot in the front row.
TOMMY HILFIGER
You can convey a refined-yet-sporty elegance with double-breasted coats, suede field jackets and scarf-print silk dresses. Or you could just create an elaborate set for a fashion show with a brick-path runway, park benches and ivy-covered walls. Tommy Hilfiger did both.
Not leaving anything to chance Sunday night, Hilfiger brought the hunt club to Park Avenue, creating a set inside an old armory building that complemented every look worn by the models. There was a lot of oohing and aahing as the often-jaded crowd of stylists, retailers, editors and celebrities ? including Uma Thurman ? walked in the door.
"The whole message is town and country," Hilfiger said in a pre-show interview. "There are country tweeds and a mix of suedes, leather and quilting. It sort of looks like hunting, but it's not hunting foxes, it's hunting for fun."
An uptown element was added through cashmere, fine details such as braiding and a sophisticated color palette rooted in plum, Dijon yellow, navy, dark green and burgundy.
Other than the obvious military references, Hilfiger also hit on a few of the other trends catching on during New York Fashion Week, including high necklines that draw the eye upward, long gloves and tactile fabrics. Of course, he said, it's all been skewed a little to fit his usual preppy aesthetic.
