Would You Buy a Used Car From This Man: Why Romney's Sketchy ...

see more posts by Sarah Jones

Governor Martin O?Malley was on CNN Wednesday morning saying the President ?dominated the debate.? He said that the ?crystallizing moment? was when President Obama said, ?if a business person presented the sort of sketchy plan that you?ve presented for our economic recovery, or these massive tax cuts for corporations, and the wealthy, you wouldn?t invest in that??

Watch the clip from CNN?s Starting Point here:

O?MALLEY: What?s very clear is that President Obama dominated the debate last night and you know that because both sides are talking about the President?s performance. I thought he drew very sharp and clear contrasts between policies that are actually causing us to recover jobs, versus the policies of the past that Governor Romney wants to take us back to because of the job losses in the first place. And the crystallizing moment, at least as I was watching it, Soledad, came when President Biden (sic) turned to Governor Romney and said to him, if a business person presented the sort of sketchy plan that you?ve presented for our economic recovery, or these massive tax cuts for corporations, and the wealthy, you wouldn?t invest in that because there aren?t the details to back up the plan. And so I thought it was a very strong performance for the president last night.

O?Malley is right to reinforce the message of the sketchy deal, because no businessperson would invest in what Romney is selling. It?s as if he?s trying to sell an entire corporation, not just shares, without disclosing the financials. Instead, he?s offering a topsheet signed by his wife and his lawyer that says he?s a great guy who does nice things for the members of his church. That?s great, but back to this trillion dollar investment, he won?t even let us see the basic financials because he says we would ?attack? him if we did. If that?s true, if we would attack him, then the financials must not be what he says they are.

We also can?t see his tax returns, so we don?t know where his other interests might be but he says to trust him. We can?t see his tax plan, but he says trust him. Do you want to put down a trillion on this deal? Republicans fear monger about the deficit but they?re the ones who drove it up from Clinton?s surplus because they didn?t think they had to pay for anything, and so far, Romney is no different. His ?plan? involves $5 trillion in tax cuts for the rich and $2 trillion in new military spending the Pentagon isn?t asking for with no plan to pay for it.

But then, Romney ran a business that made money by running up debt that he then didn?t pay off. Is he going to bankrupt the USA? If so, it would be wise to sell the welfare sucking red states first ? just saying, they aren?t profitable and they are bleeding the rest of the country dry. If the USA were run like a business, they?d be the first to go under a corporate buyout debt leveraging specialist, right after Big Bird and Planned Parenthood.

Given Romney?s business history and no financials or specifics, are we going to hand him a trillion dollars, our access to healthcare, and decisions about going to war and say sure, we trust you because you do nice things for the people in your church, you have ?binders full of women?, and you?re a businessman?

Sketchy deal. Most people wouldn?t buy a car without test driving it first and knowing what it cost, but Romney wants to sell us a presidency without telling us anything. He?ll just show us beautiful drawings by the engineering team, but no details on how they?re going to actually make this thing. Does it really work? How much will it cost? Just trust him, because he?s a businessman. A businessman is not an engineer or an auto assembly team but trust him. Businessmen can do anything.

Contrary to Republican myth, businessmen do not have a great track record as presidents because America is not a business and government has larger responsibilities than the profit motive.

Never mind all of that, just trust him. It?s great. The clouds are all the right height.

NASCAR and Fox sign 8-year extension through 2022

(AP) ? NASCAR and Fox Sports Media Group announced a $2.4 billion, eight-year extension Monday that runs through 2022 and keeps the prestigious Daytona 500 and first third of the Sprint Cup Series on the network.

The deal came with a 33 percent annual fee hike for Fox, which has been with NASCAR since 2001. Fox will pay an average of $300 million annually beginning in 2015.

The deal was put together during an early negotiating window with Fox, which has two full seasons remaining on its current contract with NASCAR.

"NASCAR has been in very good hands and has enjoyed tremendous success the last 12 years in large part because of our fantastic partnership with FOX and FOX Sports Media Group," said NASCAR chairman Brian France. "This extension with FOX Sports Media Group helps position the sport for future growth as NASCAR continues to be an anchor with one of the world's largest and most influential media companies."

Fox gets the first 13 Sprint Cup Series races under the deal, and the entire Camping World Truck Series.

An additional and important component to the deal for NASCAR is the inclusion of "TV Everywhere" rights, which allow Fox to live stream its races online beginning with the 2013 season-opening Daytona 500. Fox can also stream pre- and post-race coverage, race highlights and in-progress race highlights.

That portion of that deal was made possible by NASCAR reacquiring control of its digital platform, which goes into effect next year.

"This was something that was long overdue," said Steve Herbst, NASCAR's vice president of broadcasting and production. "It services the fans in a way we've never done before, and provides another great way to consume the product. NASCAR is now delivering across every platform."

Fox paid a fee increase to NASCAR for the first time in more than a decade, and the deal puts NASCAR in the driver seat for negotiations on the remainder of its contract. ESPN and Turner hold the rights on the remainder of the schedule through 2014, and exclusive negotiations with NASCAR do not begin until next summer.

"We really enjoy the position we are in right now; this sets the stage for the next series of deals," said Herbst, who wasn't surprised by the fee increase because "our sport delivers incredible great live action on a week-to-week basis. We are DVR-proof programming, and we deliver February to November consistency."

Fox opened its negotiating window early, and announced this deal less than two weeks after completing an eight-year extension through 2021 with Major League Baseball. The network is shoring up all of its programming in anticipation of launching a national all-sports cable network, which is expected to be replace the motorsports dedicated channel Speed.

Much of NASCAR's shoulder programming is aired now on Speed, which is expected to be called Fox Sports 1 after the re-brand.

This new contract will put the Truck Series on the national cable channel. Fox retained the rights to practices and qualifying sessions, but did not announce Monday how much will air or on what channel.

But Fox remains committed to NASCAR.

"NASCAR has been a staple at FOX for more than a decade and we consider it one of the signature sports we cover," FSMG co-presidents and CEO's Eric Shanks and Randy Freer said in a statement. "With our commitment renewed, we look forward to presenting NASCAR thoroughly, professionally and creatively for many years to come."

Tough Enough Nutrition and Fitness: Nut Butter Recipe : Potential ...

Health Benefits of Nuts
According to the USDA 37% of the US population has some form of cardiovascular disease. High risk factors for CVD are high cholesterol, lipids, hypertension, high sodium/fat diet, overweight/obesity, tobacco use etc. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests utilizing nutrient dense foods versus empty calorie foods such as soda, candy, french fries etc. ?Nutrient dense foods are suggested to be high in vitamins and minerals, low in solid fats, added sugars, and added refined grains.?

?Many people have come to me stating they avoid eating nuts due to there high calorie and high fat content. Believe it or not, nuts are considered a nutrient dense food and suggested (in moderation) by the USDA nutritional guidelines in a healthful diet to REPLACE some animal based protein.??In moderation it is suggested through scientific study that mixed nut consumption can protect against cardiovascular disease and potentially other chronic disease states. This is further supported by a study on the health benefits of nuts published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2006. ?Walnuts, chestnuts, and pecans are also suggested to have the highest antioxidant content of all the nuts. ?

The fat in plant based foods (including nuts and legumes) are considered oils not solid fats. One ounce of nuts ranges from 150-200 calories. Often one serving of a nut butter is equal to 2tbs and 200 calories (1tbs= 80-100cal). ?Nuts are nutrient dense and a food where a little goes a long way. ?For adults it is suggested the typical diet be composed of 45-65% carbs, 10-35% protein, and 20-35% fats. Fats supply calories as well as fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) necessary for many life processes. Animal fats include cholesterol and tend to be higher in saturated fats vs. monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. ?

With the mention of antioxidants I felt it may be beneficial to explain what they are. Antioxidants are "substances that are capable of counteracting the damaging, but normal, effects of the physiological process of oxidation in animal tissue. Antioxidants are nutrients and enzymes that are believed to play a role in preventing chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis etc." - Discovery Health. Nutrients known for their antioxidant properties include vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), beta-caretene (from Vit A), and selenium.

High Antioxidant Food List

Vitamin E:?vegetable oils, walnuts, peanuts, almonds, seeds, olives, avocado, wheat germ, liver, and leafy green vegetables.
Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, broccoli, leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, cantaloupe, and strawberries.
Beta-Carotene: Think orange/yellow foods such as?cantaloupe, mangoes, papaya, pumpkin, peppers, spinach, kale, squash, sweet potatoes, and apricots.
Selenium?in seafood, beef, pork, chicken, Brazil nuts, brown rice, and whole wheat bread

What are phytochemicals? Phytochemicals occur naturally in many plants, including?in grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits.?Many plant based foods are being studied for their potential antioxidant health benefits due to being suggested to have chronic disease preventive properties. ?The following table is from Discovery Health to specify different phytochemicals and their food sources.

Phytochemical
Food source
Allyl sulfides
Onions, garlic, leeks, chives
Carotenoids?(e.g., lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin)
Tomatoes, carrots, watermelon, kale, spinach
Curcumin
Turmeric
Flavonoids?(e.g., anthocyanins, resveratrol, quercitin, catechins)
Grapes, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, apples, grapefruit, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries
Glutathione
Green leafy vegetables
Indoles
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy
Isoflavones?(e.g., genistein, daidzeins)
Legumes (peas, soybeans)
Isothiocyanates?(e.g., sulforaphane)
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy
Lignans
Seeds (flax seeds, sunflower seeds)
Monoterpenes
Citrus fruit peels, cherries, nuts
Phytic acid
Whole grains, legumes
Phenols, polyphenols, phenolic compounds?(e.g., ellagic acid, ferulic acid, tannins)
Grapes, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, grapefruit, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, tea
Saponins
Beans, legumes
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Chart from Discovery Health?

With this all being said, foods high in antioxidants and phytochemicals are beneficial to add to the diet but there are studies with conflicting results in regards to supplementation.?Encourage high antioxidant foods within your diet vs additional supplementation. My?favorite Dietitian phrase is "moderation is key." The best healthful diet overall is to have a mixture of colorful fruits, vegetables, low fat/lean proteins, whole grains, and nuts with low sodium, low added sugars, and limited refined grains. Variation is a powerful thing. ?Try to include less processed foods and move towards a more clean and natural foods approach is beneficial. ?

I have been annoying my husband all day by saying "WOW this is blowing my mind!!! I cant believe this it. This is really all you have to do to make peanut butter! Really? this is it? And yes...really...this is all you do...it is extremely easy. ?By making your own peanut butter you know exactly where the nuts are coming from, what it is being made with, and are in control of any special flavorings or added oils.

JESS THE RD'S SIMPLE, YET, MIND BLOWING

?NATURAL NUT BUTTER RECIPE?

What you need:

2C of peanuts - or any nut of your choice (you can either purchase them roasted or roast them slightly in the oven/brown them lightly in a saute pan)
A Food Processor

Directions:

Add the nuts to the food processor. Start by utilizing the chop setting, then mix, then puree. Gradually adding more speed for a more fine texture. Once the nut butter is to your preferred consistency think about adding neat flavors ex: all spice, cloves, raisins, dried apples, orange zest, cinnamon, vanilla, cayenne, honey, agave, molasses etc. This process took about a total of 10 minutes. ?No added oil is necessary to make a nut butter. The natural oils in the nuts are released through the processing and are adequate to make a spreadable texture. It does get to a point where it looks like a cement ball...keep chopping...it will smooth out.

Yahoo CEO Mayer's career advice - Postcards

She is No. 3 on Fortune's 40 Under 40, No. 14 on the Fortune Most Powerful Women list, and at 37, the youngest CEO--male or female--on the Fortune 500.

How did Marissa Mayer climb so far so fast?

This picture of Mayer--who is on the right, with her best friend from childhood, Abigail Garvey Wilson--offers a glimpse of where she came from. I talked with Abby, as well as dozens of other people Mayer grew up with--from her hometown of Wausau, Wisconsin, to Stanford University to Google (GOOG) to Yahoo (YHOO), where she was recruited last July to turn around the troubled company.

Marissa Mayer: Ready to rumble?at Yahoo is my profile of Mayer that appears in the new issue of Fortune. The profile tells you about her career credos: "Do things that you're not quite ready to do. And surround yourself with the smartest people," she says.

Another perspective, which I didn't have room to include in the story, comes from Tom Stocky, a former Google employee who graduated from the highly regarded APM--associate product manager--program that Mayer created for rising stars there. "She goes beyond managing people to investing in people on a personal level," Stocky told me. "That causes everyone on her team to work harder."

Stocky, who is now a director of product management at Facebook (FB), recalls Mayer once telling him: "Most people think of a career trajectory as a sloping line. Really, it's a step function." She went on to tell him: "When you're ready to take the next step or take on more responsibility, you should start doing your job at the next level."

If you do that, Mayer said, "The promotion will come naturally."

Hmm, Mayer took her own advice. Now at Yahoo, where she is the fifth CEO in five years--caring for restless investors as well as a new baby boy--she'll definitely be working at the next level.

50% Of Pets Overweight ? 98.7 AMP Radio ? All The Hits

First, we have the original problem of so many people in our country being obese and now this! I actually read a statistic the other day that said 50 percent yes on half of the country will be obese (not just overweight OBESE) bu the year 2030.? That is crazy to me! However, now it is even effecting our house pets!? What is going on! I actually remember my High School girlfriend she had a cat that we called ?Fat Pat? because the thing was so big it could barely move! Our 16 year-old minds just thought it was so funny!

Looks like Fat Pat is not the only one.? The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (did anyone even know there was such an association?) says that one half of cats and fogs are currently overweight.? They went on to mention the fact that 20 percent of these pets are actually obese.? The association recommended that pet owners should keep their pets on a diet and make sure that they are getting outside to get plenty of exercise.? The bigger problem I see here is if the majority of us can not keep ourselves on diets with exercise how in the world can we expect people to do this with their pets!

Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2013 Holding Coronation Ball in Laramie

courtesy Holly Kennedy

Laramie?s own Holly Kennedy will be kicking off her year as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2013 with a Coronation Ball on October 20th at WyoTech?s West Laramie Campus. The event will include dinner, dancing, a silent auction and a live auction to help Kennedy raise funds for her year as Wyoming rodeo royalty.

Kennedy said she?s had a full schedule since she earned the title of Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2013 in Douglas during the Wyoming State Fair & Rodeo in August. Her platform is all about instilling confidence as Kennedy said she will use her time to encourage others to ?Stand Up, Stand Out and Speak Up? about what is important to them. Kennedy claims that although she has been involved in agriculture her whole life, she didn?t care to be a rodeo queen when she was younger. It wasn?t until she saw the impact that rodeo royalty have by inspiring people and advocating for agriculture that she decided she wanted to be a part of it.

Her official duties will begin on January 1, 2013 but before then she will have the opportunity to watch Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2012, Kimberly Kuhn, compete for Miss Rodeo America at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December. Then she will be traveling the United States representing the sport of rodeo, the state of Wyoming and the Albany County community.

The Coronation Ball is a way to the community to show their support for Kennedy. Pre-sale tickets are available at Murdoch?s, Boot Barn, Martindale?s and First Interstate Bank in downtown Laramie. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th at WyoTech?s West Laramie Campus at 2075 Venture Drive.

Energy drinks improve heart function, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Consuming energy drinks can exert acute positive benefits on myocardial performance, according to research presented August 27 at the ESC Congress by Dr Matteo Cameli from University of Siena."In recent years the energy drink market has exploded, with more people than ever before turning to these products as quick 'pick me ups', whether to stay awake during all night study vigils or gain the edge in sport," said Dr Cameli.

"With energy drinks containing both caffeine and taurine concerns have been raised of adverse effects on the heart. While caffeine increases blood pressure, studies suggest that taurine may stimulate the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum."

In the current study the researchers used speckle-tracking echocardiography, the avant-garde technique in echocardiography, and echo Doppler analysis to explore the influence of energy drinks on heart function.

For the study 35 healthy subjects (mean age 25 years), drank a body surface area indexed amount of an energy drink (168 ml/m2) containing caffeine and taurine.

Assessments of heart rate, blood pressure, left ventricular function and right ventricular function were undertaken at baseline and one hour after consumption.

The graph above shows the relative changes from baseline in heart rate, blood pressure and left and right ventricular parameters one hour after consuming the energy drink. Heart rate increased by 1.2% (p=ns [not significant]), systolic blood pressure increased by 2.6% (p=ns) and diastolic blood pressure increased by 6% (p=0.02). Dr Cameli said: "This confirms that a standard energy drink consumption induces a light increase in diastolic blood pressure."

Left ventricular function improved in comparison to baseline. Ejection fraction increased by 5% (p=0.01), mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) (which evaluates longitudinal ventricular function) increased by 11% (p<0.001), global longitudinal strain increased by 10% (p=0.004), and torsion (left ventricular twisting) increased by 22% (p<0.0001).

Right ventricular function was also improved one hour after consuming energy drinks. Right ventricular fractional area change (RVFAC) increased by 2% (p=0.09), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) increased by 15% (p<0.0001), and global and free wall right ventricular longitudinal strain (RVLS), (a measurement of longitudinal strain of the right ventricle), increased by 8% (p=0.001) and 5% (p=0.1) respectively.

"Taken together these results show that energy drinks enhance contractions of both the left and right ventricles, thereby delivering a positive effect on myocardial function," said Dr Cameli. "This could be explained by the inotropic effect of taurine that, as previously demonstrated, stimulates the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum."

He continued: "Our study was performed in young healthy individuals at rest. Future studies need to focus on whether such benefits persist after long term consumption of energy drinks, and what the effects are of consuming these drinks during physical activity. It will also be important to determine which of the effects are induced in patients with cardiac disease to further our understanding of the potential benefits or risks of energy drink consumption."

Heart separation device improves three year outcomes in heart failure patients

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? A novel non-invasive device which separates healthy and damaged heart muscle and restores ventricle function improves 3 year outcomes in patients with ischemic heart failure, according to research presented at the ESC Congress 2012.

The findings were presented by Professor William T. Abraham at an ESC press conference on 25 August and by Dr Marco Costa at an ESC Congress scientific session on 27 August.

Heart failure is a common, debilitating, and potentially deadly condition in which the heart is unable to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the needs of the body. Symptoms of heart failure negatively impact quality of life and include shortness of breath, persistent coughing or wheezing, buildup of excess fluid in body tissues (edema), fatigue, lack of appetite or nausea, impaired thinking, and increased heart rate. More than 20 million people around the world are affected.

Many heart attack survivors experience enlargement of the heart, causing a decrease in cardiac output that results in heart failure symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath. The healthy portion of the heart not affected by the heart attack has to compensate for the loss in output and becomes overloaded over time. Current treatment options for patients whose hearts have enlarged are limited.

The Parachute Ventricular Partitioning Device is the first minimally invasive treatment for patients with heart failure caused by damage to the heart muscle following a heart attack. The Parachute device is implanted in the left ventricle through a small catheter inserted in the femoral artery.

"The device creates a barrier between the non-functioning, damaged segment of heart muscle and the healthy, functional segment of heart muscle," said Dr Costa. "This decreases the overall volume of the left ventricle chamber and restores its optimal geometry and function. The procedure is performed in the catheterization laboratory under conscious sedation."

Two-year clinical data presented at the EuroPCR conference earlier this year demonstrated improved overall cardiac function and quality of life for patients treated with the Parachute device.

The current study included 31patients treated in the US and Europe with the Parachute system. The New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification of 1 (mildest) to 4 (most severe) was used to define the severity of heart failure at 1, 2 and 3 years after treatment.

The average NYHA class at baseline was 2.6. This improved to 1.6 (p<0.001) at 1 year, 1.9 (p<0.01) at 2 years and 1.8 (p<0.0001) at 3 years post treatment. Dr Costa said: "This shows that the severity of heart failure maintained its improvement over time after treatment with the Parachute device."

The proportion of patients who were hospitalized due to worsening heart failure increased from 29.7% at 2 years to 33.2% at 3 years after treatment. "This small increase could be because the Parachute is specifically targeting the structural heart problem by excluding the scar caused from a heart attack which initiated the negative ventricle remodeling," said Dr Costa.

The low cardiac death rate of 6.5% at 2 years remained unchanged at 3 years. "This suggests that percutaneous ventricle restoration with the Parachute system results in a plateau of the progression of heart failure in these patients," said Dr Costa. "These outcomes compare favorably with current medical therapy in a similar high-risk patient population."

"These results are compelling," said Professor Abraham. "The sustained improvements in functional capacity and plateauing effect seen in outcomes three years after treatment with the Parachute device are particularly encouraging, showing that we may be able to slow the progression of heart failure -- a very exciting prospect."

"We were already very excited about the two-year clinical data presented at the EuroPCR conference earlier this year," said Dr Costa. "Our three-year results in this high-risk population reinforce our initial enthusiasm and fuel our motivation to start a large randomized trial later this year."

Dr Costa concluded: "In these two first-in-man studies we have shown that the Parachute device is safe and leads to sustained improvements in symptoms, heart function, and clinical outcomes over three years. This points to a potentially historical turning point in the treatment of heart failure caused by a heart attack."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

Obama is using Saturday's radio and Internet address to discuss a surging campaign issue. He says his goal is to strengthen Medicare and preserve the program for future generations.

Obama makes no mention of Republican rival Mitt Romney but says Republicans in Congress would turn Medicare into a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs. The GOP ticket has accused Obama of cutting more than $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care law.

In the Republican address, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says the nation is being hurt by "the looting of the Treasury and 20 years of deficit spending."

Twins' Diamond suspended 6 games by MLB

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:03 p.m. ET Aug. 24, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Minnesota Twins starter Scott Diamond was suspended six games by Major League Baseball on Friday for a pitch thrown near the head of Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton.

Diamond was immediately ejected after the left-hander's pitch behind Hamilton's head in the third inning of Thursday night's game.

The suspension and undisclosed fine were announced by Joe Garagiola Jr., senior vice president of standards and on-field operations for MLB.

Since Diamond is appealing the suspension, he remained on the Twins' active roster.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer had been hit by a pitch thrown by Roy Oswalt in the top of the third inning in the series opener Thursday night.

There were no warnings issued after Mauer got hit, but plate umpire Wally Bell quickly tossed Diamond. Manager Ron Gardenhire also got ejected after he charged out of the dugout to protest Bell's decision.

"Anytime in an umpire's judgment they go in the head area, we have to take care of business," Bell said after Thursday night's game. "I felt at the time that he had to be ejected for it."

Diamond insisted he was just trying to pitch inside and "that pitch definitely got away."

Hamilton said before Friday's game that he felt the ball whizzing by the back of his neck. But he didn't think Diamond did that intentionally.

"I don't think he was trying to hit me in the head, I just think the ball got away from him, but it got away from him and it was close," Hamilton said. "It was close, but like I said, I don't think he did that on purpose."

Hamilton said it was the closest a pitch has ever come to hitting him in the head.

"Behind the back of my neck, I could actually feel it when it went by," Hamilton said. "Just feel the wind from the ball when it goes by."

'Obese & Expecting' Highlights Health Risks

One more worry in the country's obesity crisis: a new documentary highlights the perils of extra pounds during pregnancy.

The TLC special, "Obese & Expecting," follows four obese women through complicated pregnancies and painful deliveries that put mom and baby at risk.

"We know that obesity during pregnancy increases the risk of diabetes and preeclampsia," said Dr. Marjorie Greenfield, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. "And when the mom is big, the baby can be big, raising the risk of birth injury and C-section."

A scene from the documentary shows doctors struggling to give one woman an epidural through the fat in her back.

"We spent 45 minutes attempting to put the spinal in," said Dr. Charles Hux, a New Jersey OB/GYN featured in the documentary. "With so many layers of fat, it's difficult to be certain that the needle went into the exact space it should go in."

After several tries, the team gave up, deciding instead to give the woman a general anesthetic and a C-section.

"Going to sleep carries significant risks, even for a slim pregnant woman," said Greenfield, calling the decision a last resort. "And the risk goes up significantly in a woman who's overweight."

Studies suggest nearly half of U.S. women who are of child-bearing age are obese, a problem that weighs heavily on doctors.

"It's harder to provide excellent care to someone who's obese because a lot of things we do are not as accurate," said Greenfield, explaining how ultrasounds and other tests to gauge the baby's growth can be skewed by the mother's fat. "It's also harder to feel the position of the baby."

That fat, and the fact that obesity can cause irregular periods, also means women might not realize they're pregnant.

"If you don't know you're pregnant, you might not avoid things that are toxic, like alcohol, smoking and certain medications," said Greenfield, adding that prenatal vitamins are also important. "And a lot of what we do in prenatal care depends on knowing exactly how far along a woman is. If you don't have a sense of gestational age, it's harder to provide the right care."

Obesity has also forced hospitals to adapt, adding delivery tables that can be made wider and hold up to 600 pounds, Greenfield said.

"The old tables only went up to 450 pounds," she said. "That's just not realistic anymore."

Weight gain during pregnancy is normal. But obese women should gain no more than 15 pounds, roughly half the amount recommended for women of normal weight.

"For someone with bad eating habits, that's going to be really hard," said Greenfield, describing how pregnancy cravings and the "eating for two" mentality can conspire to pack on the pounds. "Lifestyle change is always hard. But during pregnancy, I think women are more motivated to do it for themselves and their baby."

"Obese & Expecting" premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on TLC.

Knitting & Crochet for Charity & Creative @ Home Link-Up Party ...

Don?t forget to join in the Creative @ Home Link-Up Party! To find it, simply scroll down to the bottom of this post! We?d love to have you join us! Link any and all the creative things you do at home!

My Mom first taught me the basics of crochet, although at the time, I really wasn?t that interested. I did learn the basics and how to make Granny Squares. It?s wasn?t until years later that I decided to try my hand at it again and fell in love with yarn. After crocheting for several years and pretty much learning how to do just about everything, I decided to challenge myself to learn how to knit and I?m totally hooked! I love to crochet and knit because it?s something that I can put down as needed and not get lost or forget where I am. It?s also very relaxing and comforting. I?m able to make useful things that my family and friends can use. A hand crocheted or knitted item is a gift from the heart. As I knit or crochet, I like to pray for the person who will be receiving the item, so each item I crochet equals hours of prayers for that person. It?s a blessing for me to be able to spend that time in prayer.

I often start up projects just to keep my hands busy or to relieve boredom (like I?m ever really bored with my 2 boys! LOL!). I don?t have any particular person in mind when I start these projects, so I decided to look into some charities that accept hand crocheted or knitted items to help those in need. I?m going to pick 1-2 charities and create items for them. It will be a blessing to know that my work will help those in need. Whether it?s to provide warmth or just show that someone loves and cares for them, it really doesn?t matter.

We have received so much love and support from?individuals who didn?t even know us, except through the blogging community. I want to return some of that to others in need. I don?t do this for acclaim or to be recognized, I do it because it was first done for us. Christ died on the cross to give us the greatest gift of all. He did it not to become famous or for other selfish reasons, He did it soley out of LOVE for US! We, as Christians, are called to be Jesus to those around us. We should do this not for fame or acclaim, but quietly and simply. We should do it because that?s what Jesus would do and what He DID DO FOR US.

There are so many charities out there that accept crochet and knitted items. The one?s listed below are just a sampling. I have found that there are generally at least 1 sort of these organizations in nearly every average size town. Because of our past history with both infant loss and premature/ill babies, I will most?definitely be making baby items. This is a cause very close to my heart. When Gabriel died, we were given the sweetest infant cap and sweater, as well as a beautiful afghan. These items were created by volunteers and they mean so much to me. They are something that I can hold, smell and snuggle?they give me comfort.

The Preemie Project ? Founded in the spring of 2005, The Preemie Project strives to bring warmth, comfort, and support to critically ill infants and their families.

Knit Your Bit ? The National WWII Museum is proud to launch its own Knit Your Bit campaign. You can help the Museum honor WWII veterans by Knitting Your Bit- in this case a simple, but cozy, scarf to be donated to a veteran in a Veterans Center somewhere in the United States.

Mother Bear Project ? The Mother Bear Project is a grass-roots, non-profit group dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children, primarily those affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of hand-knit and crocheted bears.

Warm Up America ? Warm Up America! (WUA!) is an organization made up of volunteers who create handmade afghan blankets, clothing and accessories to help those in need. These items provide warmth and comfort to people who have lost their homes, fled abusive relations, or are being cared for in hospices, shelters, hospitals, and nursing home.

Also, don?t forget to think about your local hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, hospices, etc. Most of these places take in donations of this type and they are given to people in need in your area.
