Four fun Halloween photo effects

Carved pumpkins at the 7th annual pumpkin carving competition at the Helix Lounge in Washington on October 26, 2011.

Between the kids? costumes, jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating, there are a lot of photo moments to capture. To get great photos in these difficult lighting situations, though, you?ll have to do a little more than just point and shoot. So check out our tips for taking your photos up a notch. And we?ll give you ideas for special effects that will make an already spooky holiday even spookier.

Photographing jack-o-lanterns
Great jack-o-lantern shots capture both the glow coming from the pumpkin and the textures of the pumpkin?s skin and surrounding objects in low light.

Take this shot at twilight (about 20 minutes after the sun goes down) when the glow from your pumpkin will produce about the same amount of light as the sky. With the exposure for everything the same, your camera will easily capture details in the entire shot.

If you miss this window, put your camera in HDR mode (High Dynamic Range) mode (Cameras we recommend, like the $200 Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS have this). In HDR mode, the camera takes an overexposed shot to capture the pumpkin skin detail and an underexposed shot for the candle?s glow and then merges them together without your intervention. If your camera doesn?t have an HDR mode, you can merge photos of different exposures together using Adobe Photoshop Elements? Photomerge Exposure editing mode.

Be sure you can?t see the flame of the candle when taking your shots. It will appear too bright as a spot in your picture. And use a tripod and set the camera?s self-timer to avoid the brief shake that inevitably occurs when you press down on the shutter button.

Creating ghosts in your photos
You can create ghosts two ways. If your camera supports long exposures ? at least 8 seconds ? you can have the person or object remain in the frame for part of the exposure, about 5 seconds. The space where the person was is double exposed, making your subject appear somewhat translucent.

The other way to create a ghost is to take two photos and merge them together. In Photoshop Elements, you create two layers. Make sure the photo containing the person is the layer on top and then experiment with the transparency of that layer to create your effect.

Making ghost writing
For ghost writing, you?ll need a camera that supports exposures of at least 8 seconds, with 16 or 30 producing even better results, a tripod or flat surface, a flashlight or two and darkness. The trick is to use the flashlight to draw pictures or words in the air. The long exposure captures the trailing light as a bright image floating in the air.

Keep in mind that the camera captures the mirror image of what you draw, so you?ll have to write your message backward (hard) or flip the photo in your photo editing program (easy).

Shooting spooky silhouettes
Around sunset, take photos against the beautiful orange and red sky without a flash to create a silhouette of your subject. Make sure you have a clear sightline to the sky, so your subject doesn?t have to compete with other objects on the horizon. The technique works great with kids in funky costumes.

The HBK-Hit Man Rivalry: Taking Shawn?s Side

When someone is the victim of a notorious act, it can actually provide them with a unique advantage. They will always have the sympathy of the people in their corner. WWE?s greatest example of this comes from the infamous ?Montreal Screwjob? at Survivor Series 1997. The WWE Universe will always side with Bret Hart for being ?screwed.??

In reality, though, that is not the case. The actions against the WWE Hall of Famer ? although admittedly underhanded ? were completely justified. In spite of all the fences that have been mended in recent years, the fact remains: ?Bret screwed Bret.?

1238799867001|01:50Bret Hart always said he had the best intentions in mind during the tumultuous events that led up to the fateful moment at Montreal. But, which intention is he talking about? At various times throughout the newly released DVD/Blu-ray Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart: WWE?s Greatest Rivalries (WWEShop), he said he was trying to be ?the voice in the locker room,? trying ?to make Shawn better,? trying to ?make money,? trying to ?get Shawn to respect [him]? and trying ?to save the company.?

Yet, whether The "Hit Man" realized it or not, the facts suggest that his ultimate goal was actually to do whatever he could to keep himself above water in the face of an industry that had simply outgrown him.

The Kliq and The Canuckosaurus
In WWEGRs, Bret referred to established Superstars from early in his career ? names like Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior ? as ?dinosaurs,? largely because they were standing in the way of change, and threatened by the new, innovative style of young up-and-comers like him.

Years later, however, this self-proclaimed leader in the locker room seemed to be threatened by ?The Kliq? ? an ?isolated? group of Superstars comprised of Michaels, Triple H, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, who would eventually go on to form both D-Generation X and the nWo. These factions symbolized the future of the entire squared circle.

By opposing these Superstars, Bret was now the one standing in the face of change, one of the very ?dinosaurs? he had once rooted against. This ?Canuckosaurus? came down on the side of a dying way of doing things, and the death rattle would come in the cold, hard reality of Survivor Series 1997. 1151514717001|03:13

The Insult that led to disaster
In WWEGRs, ?Hit Man? claimed that he refused to lose to HBK at Survivor Series because when he told Michaels he would be happy to ?put him over,? Shawn said he would not be willing to do the same. This comment by HBK was clearly intended to insult his fellow Superstar.

Did Shawn mean it? Was it the ultimate act of disrespect? Who cares?! Bret and Shawn had been throwing extremely personal insults at each other ? both in front of and behind the camera ? for quite some time. They now both acknowledge that things had ?spun out of control.? Why was this any different? Regardless, because Hart felt disrespected, it seemed that he was going to take his bat and ball, and go home.

Bret Hart, The Joker and A-Rod
Above all, Bret deserved to get screwed in Montreal because he let personal feelings prevent him from doing what he was asked to do for the good of WWE. Above all else, WWE is entertainment at its most professional level ? not unlike a major motion picture or professional baseball game. People pay money and expect to be entertained. What better story could there be, then, to have the Canadian hero lose the title in his home country to his most-hated rival?

For a Superstar who dedicated his life to the WWE Universe, where?s the problem? In the film The Dark Knight, could Heath Ledger have decided that he didn?t want the Joker to lose to Batman in their final scene because of personal problems they might be having with their trailers? Can Alex Rodriguez refuse to hit in the order his manager laid out if he feels disrespected by Derek Jeter? Of course not! When it?s time to play, it?s time to play. A professional has to get the job done, no matter what.?

What would have come of Hulkamania if nearly three decades ago, The Iron Sheik had acted the same way Hart did? The Iranian Superstar had been offered major money by another promoter to break Hogan?s leg in their WWE Championship Match. If not for him choosing to do the right thing, Hulk Hogan might never have kicked off the incredible legacy that he did ? and, in turn, WrestleMania might not have become the global phenomenon it is today.

Bret screwed Shawn
Without a doubt, Shawn Michaels was the true victim of the Montreal incident. Because Bret would not be the bigger man, HBK was put into an impossible situation, one where he knew he would pay a huge price. Already at odds with many, he would suffer indescribable scorn by the WWE Universe and many of his peers. In WWEGRs, he called it the lowest point of his career. And it was all because he chose to do what was asked of him.

Bret Hart is, without question, one of the greatest Superstars ever to step through the ropes. However, when it comes to Survivor Series 1997, Bret ?screwed? HBK.

What about Bret Hart's side? Read a pro-"Hit Man" perspective on the infamous rivalry, then share your opinion on Facebook and Twitter.

Summary Box: Europe hopes push stocks higher (AP)

EUROPE: Stocks turned higher after Agence France-Presse reported that China has agreed to invest in Europe's financial rescue fund, which will be used to support struggling countries and banks in the European Union.

EARNINGS Boeing Co. led the Dow higher. Boeing rose 4.5 percent after reporting a bigger profit for its latest quarter than analysts expected. It also raised its forecast for 2011 earnings.

ECONOMY: Strong economic reports also helped send stocks higher. Businesses ordered more heavy machinery and other long-lasting manufactured goods last month. Sales of new homes rose in September after falling for four straight months.

UFC 137 interview: Mitrione wants to show he?s more than a heavy-handed striker

Next week at UFC 137, Matt Mitrione is back and he's facing his toughest test to date.

The former Big 10 defensive tackle and NFL veteran, has raced out to a 5-0 start, but now he faces another big puncher in Cheick Kongo. Mitrione doesn't sound like he's afraid to bang with the Frenchman, but also pointed out that he's been working on his ground game as well.

Listen to a very confident Mitrione with Kevin Iole and myself on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show. You'll be shocked to find out who "Meathead" from Season 9 of the "Ultimate Fighter" is training with now.

Democrats block GOP jobs bill over spending cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Senate has blocked Republican-backed legislation that would prevent the government from withholding 3 percent of payments to government contractors.

The legislation failed to get the 60 votes needed to end a Democratic filibuster late Thursday. Many Democrats and President Barack Obama support the idea but opposed it Thursday because it would be paid for with $30 billion in cuts from domestic agency spending. The White House promised a veto.

The withholding law was passed in 2006 by a GOP-controlled Congress. The idea then was to make sure contractors couldn't duck their taxes. Advocates of repealing it say it will help create jobs, especially from contractors with smaller profit margins on large projects.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid promised that the withholding requirement would be repealed in coming weeks.

A revolutionary discovery regarding motile cancer cells made by research scientists at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of Turku is challenging previous conceptions. The results have been published on July 25, 2011 in the Journal of Cell Biology, one of the most renowned journals in the field.

Finnish researchers found a new mechanism inhibiting the spread and growth of cancer found in motile cells

It has long been held that cells use different mechanisms for regulating migration and growth. This conception was proven false by research scientists Anja Mai and Stefan Veltel from the research team of Professor Johanna Ivaska. Their findings on aggressively spreading breast cancer cells revealed completely contrary to previous expectations that a single cell protein (p120RasGAP) acts as an important inhibitor of both cell migration and growth.

Cancer cells are characterised by traits such as uncontrollable growth and the ability to metastasise. The findings of the research team now show that the regulation of these two deadly traits in cells is interconnected, which may be an important piece of information in the future development of medicines.

Facebook Mobile's HTML5 gaming ? can it succeed? | Gamezebo

Last week, Facebook unveiled a major update to its mobile site. Along with all of the visual changes came some pretty big news for gamers: Facebook users could now play HTML5-based games on Facebook using their mobile phone. Nine games have been available since launch, and with a week to ponder, we decided it was time to dig a little deeper and analyze just what we thought of Facebook?s HTML5 gaming.

Rather than just grabbing one opinion, though, we couldn?t imagine any better pair to share their thoughts on a big happening in social mobile gaming than our own Social Games Editor, Andrew Webster, and our Mobile Games Editor, Jim Squires. Here?s what they had to say;

Andrew says...

Playing the first wave of Facebook mobile games feels like stepping back in time. Right now the platform is full of text and menu heavy RPGs, poker games, and word games. The kind of stuff that was popular when games first came to Facebook. Even FarmVille is there. But amongst the nine games that are currently available none of them are particularly engaging or striking. It?s an inauspicious beginning to what could eventually be a very important new development.

There?s potential, though.

While most of the games are simple menu driven affairs and FarmVille has been reduced to a list of animals and crops with no actual farm (though it is an easy way to do some harvesting on the go), wooga?s Magic Land: Island shows the most promise. And it?s not even that fun. At least not yet.

news

Basically, it?s an incredibly stripped down version of the main, browser-based version of Magic Land. You have a kingdom and you build houses, collect rent, farm for food, clear trees, and fight trolls, which are many of the same activities found in the main game. There are quests, but they?re pretty drab (plant 10 of these, chop down four trees, etc.) and so there?s no real sense of the world you?re in or any sort of story. Even more disappointing is that it doesn?t connect to the main version in any way. It?s just a smaller version you can put in your pocket.

It?s still the most impressive game so far. And that?s because, in spite of its shortcomings, it both looks and plays like a Facebook game. The visuals are bright and charming and you are actually tapping on characters and buildings instead of simple lines of text. It?s more like the embryonic stage of an actual game. You can see a game there if you look closely, it?s just not fully formed yet.

There?s an unfinished boat washed ashore on the island along with the words ?Coming Soon...? Funnily enough, the main version of Magic Land also has a boat feature that?s coming soon. It could be a coincidence, or, more likely, eventually these two games will eventually have some sort of interconnectivity. And that?s really the ultimate goal here: to be able to play games where ever you are on whatever device you want.

Magic Land: Island provides hope that this is on the way. Even if it?s not quite ready yet.

Jim says...

It?s hard to not agree with Andrew?s overall sentiment. As far as big launches go, Facebook?s mobile gaming initiative is something of a bust. Only the most basic of games are available so far, and none of them could really be considered fun by any real standards. Still though ? it has potential.

The kind of potential it has, however, is up for debate. While Andrew sees games like Magic Land: Island as paving the way for proper Facebook gaming, I think there?s something to be said for the style of integration we see in FarmVille Express.

news news

This isn?t FarmVille, but merely a FarmVille player aide. Anyone booting this up expecting a proper FarmVille experience is going to be sorely disappointed. I think the trick here is getting people to change their expectations.

FarmVille Express is the ultimate app for power users. Rather than clicking on square after square of land to harvest, plow, and plant, you can queue up what you want to do and tap like a madman. If you have over 200 squares of land to tend to, FarmVille Express takes a 10 minute chore and turns it into a 30 second solution. Likewise, dealing with neighbour requests has never been easier.

The trick, though, is that you can?t do everything from FarmVille Express. If you want to expand your farm, collect from trees, or click on animals, you?ll need to hit the full version. This gives players good reason to not choose between FarmVille and FarmVille Express, but to spend time using both. If they can figure out how to monetize both separately, developers like Zynga will be laughing all the way to the bank.

As much as I?d like to believe Facebook can launch a mobile gaming revolution, it just doesn?t seem like what they?ve presented here is capable of the same polish and presentation as a standalone gaming app. Facebook seems to agree, as selecting something like Zynga Poker from inside of their iOS app will bring you not to the HTML5 version, but the App Store to download the bigger offering.

If they can change that expectation though, and make Facebook mobile a place to extend your Facebook gaming experience rather than simply duplicate it, your mobile phone might just become an essential part of your daily FB habits.

Queen Elizabeth cites difficult year for Australia (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Queen Elizabeth II has expressed admiration for people who showed courage during a "difficult year" of heavy flooding in Australian towns and a devastating earthquake in New Zealand's second largest city.

The 85-year-old British monarch was speaking Friday at a reception at Parliament House in the capital, Canberra, during her 16th visit to Australia since 1954.

She reflected on Australia's record floods over the southern summer that killed 35 people.

The earthquake in neighboring New Zealand in February hit the city of Christchurch, killing at least 169 people.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, will end their 10-day visit next week by opening a meeting of the 54-nation Commonwealth in the city of Perth.

LA County Jail Abuse: Board Of Supervisors Approves Two Measures To Tackle Corruption

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County officials approved two measures Tuesday aimed at tackling alleged inmate abuse by sheriff's deputies in the country's largest jail system.

One of the measures will see the creation of a seven-member oversight commission that would offer independent reviews of inmate complaints and look into the extent of inappropriate use of force in the jails.

"There has been a shattering of public confidence in the Sheriff's Department and the jails in particular," Supervisor Zav Yaroslavsky said.

Although the commission would have no legal power to compel Sheriff Lee Baca to act, it could draft recommendations that federal authorities may end up enforcing, said Yaroslavsky's spokesman, Joel Bellman. The jails already are the subject of at least one FBI probe.

Baca has come under mounting pressure in recent weeks following numerous reports he stood by while his deputies beat inmates, took bribes and covered up wrongdoings inside the sprawling jail system, which houses some 15,000 inmates.

Officials also approved several recommendations from Supervisor Gloria Molina. These include asking Baca to install cameras in the jails within 30 days, barring deputies from striking inmates' heads in most circumstances, and banning the heavy flashlights deputies carry that can be used as batons.

The Board of Supervisors drew some criticism itself, with several residents telling officials that shortcomings were partly the board's fault because supervisors had been aware of alleged problems for years.

Why steroid treatment for COPD is ineffective

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2011) ? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leads to persistent inflammation of the airways and is typically managed with corticosteroids, a class of anti-inflammatory medication. However, corticosteroids do not improve survival nor alter the progression of COPD and may reduce lung symptoms as little as 20 percent. A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, found why corticosteroids do not work well for COPD patients and how additional treatment with sulforaphane -- an ingredient of broccoli and other vegetables -- can improve the effectiveness of corticosteroids.

The study was published online October 17, 2011, in advance of print in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

COPD is a major public health problem for both the developed and the developing world, and is most often caused by cigarette smoking or exposure to pollutants from combustion. Characterized by chronic bronchitis and emphysema, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and affects 24 million Americans and 210 million people worldwide.

Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) is critical component in a chain of reactions that enable corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. However, HDAC2 is substantially reduced in the lung tissue of individuals with COPD. In the study, Johns Hopkins researchers found that S-nitrosylation causes HDAC2 dysfunction and leads to corticosteroid insensitivity in the alveolar macrophages of the lungs of individuals with COPD. S-nitrosylation of HDAC2 occurs from exposure to cigarette smoke, a primary cause of COPD.

"This study provides the mechanism of exaggerated inflammation observed in COPD patients during exacerbations, which has been a barrier to developing effective therapy," said Rajesh Thimmulappa, PhD co-author of the study and an assistant scientist in the Bloomberg School's Department of Environmental Health Sciences.

Furthermore, the research team found that treatment with sulforaphane restored HDAC2 activity and corticosteroid sensitivity. Previous studies by the research team showed sulforaphane activates the Nrf2 pathway (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) and it is being tested in clinical trial for patients with COPD.

"Restoring corticosteroid sensitivity in patients with COPD by targeting the Nrf2 pathway holds promise for effectively treating exacerbations," said Shyam Biswal, PhD, senior author of the study and professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Authors of "Denitrosylation of HDAC2 by Targeting Nrf2 Restores Glucocorticosteriod Sensitivity in Macrophages from COPD Patient" are Deepti Malhotra, Rajesh Thimmulappa, Nicolas Mercado, Kazuhiro Ito, Ponvijay Kombairaju, Sarvesh Kumar, Jinfang Ma, David Feller-Kopman, Robert Wise, Peter Barnes and Shyam Biswal.

Intel posts stronger-than-expected 3Q numbers

(AP) ? Intel says better sales of chips for laptop PCs and computer servers contributed to a 17 percent increase in third-quarter net income and a 28 percent increase in revenue.

The numbers are likely to provide some comfort for investors jittery about the weak state of the global computer market. But they don't change the underlying dynamics likely to keep PC demand depressed.

Net income was $3.47 billion, or 65 cents per share, compared with $2.96 billion, or 52 cents per share, a year ago.

Excluding special items, earnings were 69 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 62 cents per share.

Revenue was $14.2 billion, compared with $11.1 billion a year ago. Analysts expected $13.9 billion.

Intel Corp.'s stock rose 93 cents, or 4 percent, to $24.21.

Romney says foreclosures should "hit the bottom" (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Mitt Romney came to the state with the highest foreclosure rate in the nation and said he wants to allow home foreclosures to "hit the bottom" to help the housing industry recover.

In an interview published Tuesday ahead of presidential debate, Romney told Las Vegas Review Journal's editorial board that solving the foreclosure crisis would require letting banks proceed against homeowners who have defaulted on their mortgages. New investors could then rent out the homes until markets adjusted.

"As to what to do for the housing industry specifically and are there things that you can do to encourage housing: One is, don't try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom," Romney said.

Romney elaborated during the presidential debate Tuesday night. "The idea of the federal government running around and saying, `We're going to give you some money for trading in your old car...or we're going to keep banks from foreclosing if you can't make your payments," Romney said, "The right course is to let markets work."

Nevada, where seven of the presidential candidates are debating, has the country's highest foreclosure rate and the nation's highest unemployment rate.

Democrats immediately criticized Romney as out of touch with middle class Americans, many of whom are struggling to hold on to their homes amid high unemployment.

"Mitt Romney's message to Nevada homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage bills is simple: You're on your own, so step aside," President Barack Obama's reelection campaign spokesman, Ben LaBolt, said in a statement. "This is just one more indication that while he will bend over backwards to preserve tax breaks for large corporations and tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, Mitt Romney won't lift a finger to restore economic security for the middle class."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada also went after Romney. "Nevada has the highest foreclosure rate in America, and it has for almost three years. And here's what Mitt Romney said: He would just let them hit rock bottom," Reid said during a press conference in the U.S. Capitol. "I don't know what's more graphic than that, in how we have different views of what the world should be like than our Republican friends."

But the home foreclosure issue has been almost entirely absent from the GOP presidential race. While it was mentioned during the presidential debate Tuesday, and Romney addressed it as part of a larger answer, the candidates quickly started talking about bank bailouts instead.

Dancing With the Stars Recap: A Sometimes Awkward '80s Night

Week Five of Dancing With the Stars has come and gone, and for some of the competitors on the famed ABC parquet floor, that probably comes as a relief.

J.R. Martinez stole the show again and Rob Kardashian continued to impress judges and fans with his improvement, one of the season's pleasant surprises.

Beyond that, though? Oye.

 J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff

It took about an hour before J.R. Martinez injected some life into this week's show that earned a 10 from Bruno and had Carrie Ann a bit ... hot and bothered?

"Muy caliente!" she exclaimed. "I want more of that!" Same here, Carrie Ann. Same here. J.R.'s samba earned him 28 points, good for a lead of three over ...

Rob Kardashian and David Arquette. Yup, David stepped up big!

First, it was Kim Kardashian's brother, giving his strongest, sexiest effort to date and earning 25 points. This guy is actually looking like a contender!

Give Arquette credit, too, because his tango with Kym Johnson to "Tainted Love" proved how good he is at these slower, intense, passionate dances.

Ricki Lake took a bit of a step back with her foxtrot, scoring a modest 24. We don't think she'll be going anywhere, but it was well below her standards.

Hope Solo notched a 24 as well, but was ripped by the judges for some reason.

Maybe they see unrealized potential in Hope more than other stars? Maybe they just weren't fans of her nude ESPN magazine cover? We'll never know.

In any case, she got an earful after a decent, unspectacular effort. She was also hit hard by Maksim Chmerkovskiy in the literal sense, busting her lip!

Accidentally, of course. Ballroom dancing is a contact sport!

Hope Solo and Maksim ChmerkovskiyRob Kardashian and Cheryl BurkeRicki Lake and Derek Hough

In the bottom tier, Nancy Grace looked full-on awkward getting a ittle raunchy with Tristan MacManus, while Carson Kressley's jive felt totally uninspired.

Chaz Bono won praise for an energetic and rhythmic samba, albeit with the qualifier that it's hard to compare it to one like J.R.'s. Lowered expectations ...

Here's a look at Monday's Dancing With the Stars scores:

  • J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff: 28
  • David Arquette & Kym Johnson: 25
  • Rob Kardashian & Cheryl Burke: 25
  • Hope Solo & Maks Chmerkovskiy: 24
  • Ricki Lake & Derek Hough: 24
  • Nancy Grace & Tristan MacManus: 22
  • Chaz Bono & Lacey Schwimmer: 21
  • Carson Kressley & Anna Trebunskaya: 19

Kinect-like device makes everything a touchscreen

Microsoft Research

Who needs an iPhone when the OmniTouch device from Microsoft Research can give you an iArm.

By Winda Benedetti

What would it look if you didn't have to carry around a phone, tablet or other touchscreen gadget to tend to your email and other on-the-go computing needs?

A team at Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University have an idea. The researchers have unveiled a project in the works that uses a Kinect-like camera to transform any surface into a touchscreen.

And I do mean any surface?? a piece of paper, a wall, a table, your hand, your arm ...

The proof-of-concept prototype?? called OmniTouch?? is a wearable camera/projection system that "allows the wearer to use their hands, arms and legs as graphical, interactive surfaces," according to a write up at the Microsoft Research website. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

The OmniTouch prototype my be rather large and bulky - not to mention downright goofy looking - at this stage, but researchers say that miniturizing it would not be difficult.

"Today?s mobile computers provide omnipresent access to information ... It is undeniable that they have forever changed the way we work, play and interact," the team writes in the OmniTouch research paper here. "However, mobile interaction is far from solved. Diminutive screens and buttons mar the user experience, and otherwise prevent us from realizing their full potential."

Their solution: The OmniTouch device combines a small, laser-based projector and a depth-sensing camera. The camera tracks the movements of the user's fingers and works on a principle similar to Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect controller for the Xbox 360. In fact, their original prototype used a Kinect camera. But the PrimeSense camera they settled on has been customized to work at short range.

"We wanted to capitalize on the tremendous surface area the real world provides," writes Hrvoje Benko, a researcher in the Natural Interaction Research group at Microsoft. "The surface area of one hand alone exceeds that of typical smart phones. Tables are an order of magnitude larger than a tablet computer. If we could appropriate these ad hoc surfaces in an on-demand way, we could deliver all of the benefits of mobility while expanding the user?s interactive capability."

To see how OmniTouch transforms everyday surfaces into interactive screens, check out this video demonstration:

The way?users are?able to resize the screen to fit different surfaces?? and even use two different surfaces at one time?? is?pretty spectacular.

Of course, as you can see from the above?photo and?video, it's not like using OmniTouch rids us of our bulky gadgetry. Instead, you have to wear?the camera/projector?mounted on one shoulder?? sort of like a pirate might wear a parrot.

And?unless you're a pirate, most of us would probably prefer to have a touchscreen phone stashed in our pocket at this point. Still, it's not hard to imagine a future in which this gadgetry is so small as to be hardly noticeable. In fact, the team insists that it wouldn't be that difficult to make a future version of OmniTouch "the size of a matchbox and as easy to wear as a pendant or a watch."

You can read their complete paper on the OmniTouch project here.

Occupy Wall Street reaches 1-month birthday (AP)

NEW YORK ? The month-old Occupy Wall Street movement continues to grow, with nearly $300,000 in the bank and participants finding satisfaction in the widening impact they hope will counter the influence on society by those who hold the purse strings of the world's economies.

The expanding occupation of land once limited to a small Manhattan park in the shadow of the rising World Trade Center complex continued through the weekend, with hundreds of thousands of people rallying around the world and numerous encampments springing up in cities large and small.

For the most part, the protest action remained loosely organized and there were no specific demands, something Legba Carrefour, a participant in the Occupy D.C. protest, found comforting on Sunday.

"When movements come up with specific demands, they cease to be movements and transform into political campaign rallies," said Carrefour, who works as a coat check attendant despite holding a master's degree in cultural studies. "It's compelling a lot of people to come out for their own reasons rather than the reasons that someone else has given to them."

The demonstrations worldwide have emboldened those camped out at Manhattan's Zuccotti Park, the epicenter of the movement that began a month ago Monday. But there is conflict too. Some protesters eventually want the movement to rally around a goal, while others insist that isn't the point.

"We're moving fast, without a hierarchical structure and lots of gears turning," said Justin Strekal, a college student and political organizer who traveled from Cleveland to New York to help. "... Egos are clashing, but this is participatory democracy in a little park."

Even if the protesters were barred from camping in Zuccotti Park, as the property owner and the city briefly threatened to do last week, the movement would continue, Strekal said.

Wall Street protesters are intent on building on momentum gained from Saturday's worldwide demonstrations, which drew hundreds of thousands of people, mostly in the U.S. and Europe.

Nearly $300,000 in cash has been donated through the movement's website and by visitors to the park, said Bill Dobbs, a press liaison for Occupy Wall Street. The movement has an account at Amalgamated Bank, which bills itself as "the only 100 percent union-owned bank in the United States."

Donated goods ranging from blankets and sleeping bags to cans of food and medical and hygienic supplies are being stored in a cavernous space donated by the United Federation of Teachers, which has offices in the building a block from Wall Street near the private park protesters occupy.

Among the items are 20 pairs of swimming goggles (to shield protesters from pepper-spray attacks). Supporters are shipping about 300 boxes a day, many with notes and letters, Strekal said.

"Some are heartwrenching, beautiful," and come from people who have lost jobs and houses, he said. "So they send what they can, even if it's small."

Strekal said donated goods, stored for a "long-term occupation," have been used to create "Jail Support" kits consisting of a blanket, a granola bar and sanitary wipes for arrested protesters to receive when they are freed.

The movement has become an issue in the Republican presidential primary race and beyond, with politicians from both parties under pressure to weigh in.

President Barack Obama referred to the protests at Sunday's dedication of a monument for Martin Luther King Jr., saying the civil rights leader "would want us to challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing those who work there."

Many of the largest of Saturday's protests were in Europe, where those involved in long-running demonstrations against austerity measures declared common cause with the Occupy Wall Street movement. In Rome, hundreds of rioters infiltrated a march by tens of thousands of demonstrators, causing what the mayor estimated was at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage to city property.

U.S. cities large and small were "occupied" over the weekend: Washington, D.C., Fairbanks, Alaska, Burlington, Vt., Rapid City, S.D., and Cheyenne, Wyo. were just a few. In Cincinnati, protesters were even invited to take pictures with a couple getting married; the bride and groom are Occupied Cincinnati supporters.

More than 70 New York protesters were arrested Saturday, more than 40 of them in Times Square. About 175 people were arrested in Chicago after they refused to leave a park where they were camped late Saturday, and there were about 100 arrests in Arizona ? 53 in Tucson and 46 in Phoenix ? after protesters refused police orders to disperse. About two dozen people were arrested in Denver, and in Sacramento, Calif., anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was among about 20 people arrested after failing to follow police orders to disperse.

Activists around the country said Saturday's protests energized their movement.

"It's an upward trajectory," said John St. Lawrence, a Florida real estate lawyer who took part in Saturday's Occupy Orlando protest, which drew more than 1,500 people. "It's catching people's imagination and also, knock on wood, nothing sort of negative or discrediting has happened."

St. Lawrence is among those unconcerned that the movement has not rallied around any particular proposal.

"I don't think the underlying theme is a mystery," he said. "We saw what the banks and financial institutions did to the economy. We bailed them out. And then they went about evicting people from their homes," he said.

In Richmond, Va., about 75 people gathered Sunday for one of the "general assembly" meetings that are a key part of the movement's consensus-building process. Protester Whitney Whiting, a video editor, said the process has helped "gather voices" about Americans' discontent.

"In regards to a singular issue or a singular focus, I think that will come eventually. But right now we have to set up a space for that to happen," Whiting said.

Some U.S. protesters, like those in Europe, have their own causes. Unions that have joined forces with the movement have demands of their own, and on Sunday members of the newly formed Occupy Pittsburgh group demanded that Bank of New York Mellon Corp. pay back money they allege it overcharged public pension funds around the country.

New York's attorney general and New York City sued BNY Mellon this month, accusing it of defrauding clients in foreign currency exchange transactions that generated nearly $2 billion over 10 years. The company has vowed to fight the lawsuit and had no comment about the protesters' allegation about pensions.

Lisa Deaton, a tea party leader from southern Indiana, said she sees similarities between how the tea party movement and the Wall Street protests began: "We got up and we wanted to vent."

But the critical step, she said, was taking that emotion and focusing it toward changing government.

The first rally she organized drew more than 2,500 people, but afterward, "it was like, `What do we do?'" she said. "You can't have a concert every weekend."

Salon suspect's ex-wife claimed abuse, instability (AP)

SEAL BEACH, Calif. ? Scott Dekraai's neighbors considered him one of the friendliest guys on the block, a man who invited them over for pool parties and played catch with his son in his yard. Friends of his ex-wife, though, say she lived in fear of the man now accused of gunning down her and seven other people at the hair salon where she worked.

He suffered post-traumatic stress disorder from a 2007 tugboat accident that mangled his leg and left a colleague dead. His marriage to Michelle Fournier was falling apart even before that, and the court battle over their 7-year-old son was still raging Wednesday, when Dekraai is accused of spraying the Salon Meritage with gunfire.

Among those killed was Fournier, his ex-wife. The salon's popular owner, Randy Fannin, also died.

Fournier's boyfriend, Michael Warzybok, said that at a court hearing Tuesday a judge had pressed Dekraai to explain why he needed more time with his son than his current custody arrangement called for. Warzybok said a court-appointed psychologist had found the roughly 50-50 arrangement was working.

"All of a sudden, he didn't get his way," said Warzybok, who was interviewed by the psychologist along with Fournier's co-workers.

Dekraai had also asked Fournier to meet for coffee Wednesday, the day of the shootings, but she turned him down.

Fournier had indicated to friends and in court documents that she was afraid of her ex-husband. Her friend Sharyn White said that just weeks before the killings, she told her that Dekraai had stopped by the salon and threatened to kill her and others.

White, who is also Dekraai's step-aunt, said Fournier told her she took the threat seriously though others in the salon laughed it off. She said Fournier also had told her that when they were still married Dekraai had once held a gun to her head.

There is no sign that Fournier sought a restraining order against her ex-husband, though other friends agree she was afraid.

"As recently as a month ago, she told me how scared she was and I offered to hire her bodyguards," said Tim Terbush, a longtime friend. He said she turned him down because she feared that would only make Dekraai more angry.

Six women and two men were killed in the shooting in the quaint seaside town of Seal Beach, which had had only one homicide in the previous four years. A wounded woman was hospitalized in critical condition, although police Sgt. Steve Bowles said Thursday she was showing signs of improvement.

Police released the names of the dead Thursday evening, shortly before about 300 people gathered for a prayer service near the salon to honor their memory.

The Rev. Peggy Price of the Center for Spiritual Living, addressed the mourners.

"Recognize that life is precious. Don't waste a moment of it," Price said. "Right in this place, just as yesterday right across the street was the presence of God ... and that presence of God is still here. It is in our sadness it is in our sorrow and it is in our anger," she said.

The prayer service included time for residents to voice their thoughts and ended with people receiving roses as they exited the service. It was followed by a candlelight vigil.

Officers who arrived within minutes of reports of shots fired encountered a horrific scene, with bodies of victims scattered throughout the salon and a man bleeding in the parking lot outside.

Ron Sesler, working the lunch rush at his restaurant next door, said he thought the rapid "pop, pop, pop" he heard was a jackhammer until a terrified woman ran in screaming, "They're shooting people."

He said the man killed outside was a regular at the restaurant who just happened to park next to the gunman as he was running back to his truck.

"If he was late, the guy would have driven away. If he was early, he would have been in here," Sesler said.

Fournier's brother, Butch Fournier, said he saw footage of the salon on TV and immediately sensed the horror.

"The worst part about it was seeing the news and seeing the awning and knowing exactly what happened without even hearing a word," he said.

Police arrested Dekraai, 41, about a half-mile from the scene. He put up no resistance and was being held without bail Thursday. Dekraai denied an Associated Press request for a jailhouse interview.

Throughout Seal Beach and the nearby city of Huntington Beach, where Dekraai lived, his bitter custody battle with Fournier was common knowledge among friends of both.

"It was a very difficult battle," said Jo Cornhall, who lives across the street from Dekraai.

Still, neighbors were stunned that the friendly man who held pool parties in his backyard and doted on his son might be responsible for what police said was the worst tragedy in the city's 96-year history.

"I'm like, `No, not this neighbor, no way. He's the nicest guy ever,'" said Stephanie Malchow, who lives next door.

In court documents filed in February, Dekraai said he had 56 percent custody of his son and his ex-wife had 44 percent. He wanted the court to grant him "final decision making authority" when it came to matters involving their son's education and his medical and psychological treatment.

In court documents filed in May, Fournier described her ex-husband as "almost manic" when it came to controlling their son.

She said Dekraai "is a diagnosed bipolar individual who has problems with his own medication and his reaction to same, and he certainly shouldn't be allowed to have unilateral and unfettered control of any and all medical and psychological aspects of our son's life."

She said then that giving Dekraai such authority would be akin to "a situation where the inmates are running the asylum."

Fournier also alleged that Dekraai had called 911 at least once and "advised that he was going to kill himself or someone else."

Board-certified psychiatrist Ronald Silverstein told the court that he had diagnosed Dekraai, a former tugboat operator, with post-traumatic stress disorder that he determined was caused by the 2007 accident.

Dekraai had a successful maritime career until the injury.

He had the joined ferry boat company Catalina Express 20 years ago as a deckhand and worked his way up to captain of one of its boats, ferrying tourists to and from the picturesque island 26 miles off the coast. He left in 2000 to work on tugboats, company spokeswoman Elaine Vaughn said Thursday.

Dekraai said in court papers that he was unable to work after the accident. He said he received $5,157 a month as part of an insurance settlement, as well as $1,610 in retirement benefits.

Court records show a temporary restraining order was obtained by Dekraai's stepfather in 2007 after the man said Dekraai attacked him, leaving him with cuts and bruises on his face and right arm. The order, which Dekraai did not contest, also said his young son had witnessed the attack.

Dekraai said in court documents that his ex-wife had poor parenting skills and a drinking problem. She called him several times a day, Dekraai said, often screaming at him over the phone and in front of their son. He said she addressed him by an expletive instead of his name and made racist references to his current wife.

At the strip mall where the shooting occurred, people streamed by a memorial to pay their respects Thursday. Amid the flowers and candles someone had left a poem asking, "Where was God? Was he looking the other way?"

Susan Davenport choked up as she spoke of Fournier.

"She was a loving mom. She was a wonderful woman. She was kind. She was generous. She was all of those things," she said.

"Our community is devastated," she added. "We know all the people. We know the people in the salon and I know Scott."
